Last Sunday we went with a friend of ours to visit his family farm.
What a treat!
The coast land of Peru turns very quickly into mountains. Every morning
we see the sun rising over the Andes- a spectacular sight,
even
though it is a bit cloudy most mornings. We visited a farm
that
lays nestled in the base of the mountains-about a 45 minute trip by car
from our house in Alto Trujillo. Among other crops, they grow
mangos, avocados, bananas, green beans, and egg plant! We
loved
walking along the irrigation canals, enjoying the green color and the
silence. They have spring water that runs into an open well
near
their front door and Hannah played for hours with the kids (there are
fish in the well). Click here
to see some of the photos. We had a great time. The
sad
part is that, in spite of the fact that they grow such an abundance of
food, they are very poor. Food is so inexpensive here that
the
farmer makes a pittance.
We had a German Comboni Lay Missionary spend a few days with us - a 19
year old young woman named Katharina! She even looks a little
like our own 19 year old daughter, Katherine. She has
volunteered
with the Combonis for one year of service and is currently living in
southern Peru in Arequipa.
All is well with us. Summer vacation is almost over.
The
kids return to school on March 15. Hannah is looking forward
to
her classes at her school, Senor de los Milagros.
With prayers for peace in our world,
Theresa, Ralph and Hannah.
